It’s tough to adhere to much less begin an exercise regimeas a stay-at-home parent but it can be done. Luckily, once you begin to look at things more creatively it’s actually the case that the day of a busy parent offers many opportunities for incorporating a workout. It’s all about knowing where to find them. Here are just a few opportunities for exercise workout time that have never presented themselves to you before.
Involve your children your workout routine With the alarming rate of childhood obesity, it’s every parent’s duty to keep their children and themselves on some sort of a regular exercise routine. Here’s one idea: The next time you tell your children to go outside to play go outside and play too. Don’t let what you need to do be an excuse to not get your heart rate up and spend more quality time with your children.
Another idea, especially if you have young children is slipping on your exercise outfit as soon as you wake up and vowing not to take them off until you’ve done your workout for the day. This way, you’re primed and ready to get down to exercising at the instant you find an opportunity – for example, when the children nod off for a nap or are watching “Yo-Gabba-Gabba”. By wearing your workout clothes, you’re constantly reminding yourself of the priority you’ve set for your exercise regime.
Now, no matter how hard you try, some days don’t seem to present any opportunities to complete your entire exercise regime. Still, you can still sneak in brief stints of activity here and there. For example, you can park in the back of the grocery store lot and sneak in a few extra steps there.
Adding on to that idea, walk a little bit faster wherever you’re walking. Stay-at-home moms and dads can workout using small children by using little ones as free weights for pushups and leg-lifts. The children will have a ball. You can even sneak in sit-ups or lunges at those down moments when you’re waiting for laundry to dry or the dryer to stop. Not matter how you slice it being active will help you feel better it gives your children a healthy and positive example to follow for the rest of their lives.
